Versus the discs you've tried
Other discs already advertise "high-visibility" and sun-reflecting colours. Isn't that the same thing?
No — and the difference is not a degree, it's a direction. A "high-visibility" disc turns up the volume: brighter pigment, glossier plastic, a sharper sun glint. But every one of those choices is judged by the eye of the person filming the ad. Your dog's eye is a different receiver. It has two colour channels, not three, so red, orange and green collapse into one yellowish band — the band grass lives in. Making an orange disc brighter makes it a brighter version of grass.
The sun glint fails for a second reason: geometry. A glossy surface reflects the sun like a mirror, which means the flash only happens when sun, disc and eye line up — a fraction of a second in flight, and almost never once the disc is lying flat in grass, which is exactly when your dog is searching for it.
GHOSTCATCHER changes the receiver, not the volume. The pattern reflects UVA — a band of sunlight a canine lens transmits and an adult human lens blocks — and the matte woven face reflects it diffusely, in every direction at once. No lucky angle required. The signal is aimed at the animal doing the finding, not the human doing the buying.
Why is it made of fabric instead of plastic?
Because the catch happens in a mouth. A rigid plastic disc arrives edge-first at a jaw; a woven disc gives. The body is tightly woven nylon canvas over a closed-cell foam rim, so the edge compresses against teeth and gums instead of striking them, mid-air catches land soft, and a miss to the face is a non-event rather than a vet visit.
The fabric also serves the optics. A matte weave reflects light diffusely — the UV pattern reads from any angle, where a glossy plastic face trades signal for glare. And it changes daily life: machine washable, quiet indoors when it lands, doesn't stiffen or crack in cold weather, and packs into a bag flat.
The honest trade: a fabric disc will not out-throw a rigid competition disc. It flies stable, decelerates gently — which makes the catch easier — and covers the 10–30 m a fetch session actually uses.
The UV pattern
So my dog sees something I can't. Is that real?
The physics is real and measured. An adult human lens absorbs almost all ultraviolet before it reaches the retina; a canine lens transmits a substantial share of it (Douglas & Jeffery, 2014). Print in UV-reflective pigment and the mark is simply not in your visual world, while the light carrying it does land on your dog's retina.
The honest limit: "light reaches the retina" and "the animal uses it to find a disc faster" are two different claims. The first is measured. The second we have tested ourselves: in our in-house trials, dogs found the UV-printed disc better than an unprinted one — by our own criteria, not yet an independent controlled study. The full research notes are here.
Is the UV harmful to my dog's eyes?
The disc emits nothing. There is no UV lamp, no LED, no power source of any kind — the pattern is pigment that reflects a slice of the sunlight already falling on the field. Your dog is exposed to exactly the ultraviolet it would be exposed to on the same walk without the disc.
Does it work indoors, or at night?
The UV layer needs ultraviolet in the environment, and that mostly means daylight. Outdoors in daytime it works — including on overcast days, since UVA passes through cloud. Indoors under warm household bulbs, and outdoors after dark, there is little UV to reflect and the pattern goes quiet.
That is why the disc does not rely on it alone. The blue-and-yellow body keeps working when the sun is not.
Does my breed see UV better than others?
No data exists to answer that, so nobody can honestly tell you yes. The measurements that exist compared species — dog, cat, ferret — not breeds. Any site publishing a UV score per breed made those numbers up.
What does change transmission is age: the lens yellows over a lifetime and lets less ultraviolet through. What does differ by breed is field of view and retinal type, and that is documented — see the breed pages.
Will the pattern wash off or fade?
The UV pattern is printed onto the finished top face in banknote-grade security ink and bonded into the fabric, so it is made to survive the washing machine. Like any pigment in constant sunlight it will fade eventually.
Safety and materials
Are frisbees safe for dogs? Read our guide →
What is the safest frisbee for dogs?
No one disc is right for every dog, but a dog safe frisbee checks five boxes: a soft edge with no hard plastic rim; light for your dog's size; a colour your dog can tell apart from grass — blue and yellow, not orange or red; it floats, so a throw into water isn't a lost disc; and it washes clean. How you throw matters as much as the disc: low, flat and in short sessions.
GHOSTCATCHER was built around all five: a closed-cell foam rim on woven nylon canvas; 130 g / 4.6 oz at 23 cm / 9 in, for dogs about 15 lb (7 kg) and up; a blue-and-yellow body with a UV pattern — a frisbee dogs can see against grass; and it is machine washable. It also floats, in our own tests.
Is it safe for my dog's teeth?
There is nothing rigid in it. The body is woven nylon canvas and the rim is closed-cell foam sewn into the hem, so the whole disc compresses under a bite instead of resisting it. What your dog's teeth meet is fabric and foam — never a hard edge.
That said: no disc is a chew toy. GHOSTCATCHER is built for catching and carrying, not for a dog to lie down and work on. Supervise play and retire the disc once a seam frays or the foam shows through the weave.
Why does my dog chew up frisbees?
Usually because the disc stays within reach after the game. Left alone with it, a dog treats a disc like any other chew toy. But a flying disc is a fetch toy, not a chew toy: it is made to be thrown, caught and brought back. Play together, and when the game is over, put the disc away where your dog can't reach it.
No soft disc is chew-proof — that's why there are three. The same soft foam rim that is gentle on teeth gives way to a dog set on chewing. Rotate the three discs, check the seams after each session, and retire a disc once a seam frays or the foam shows through the weave.
What is it made of? Any BPA or phthalates?
Tightly woven nylon canvas body, a closed-cell foam ring in the rim, bonded nylon stitching — no plastic shell anywhere. Colours are dyed in the fabric; the UV pattern is printed onto the finished top face in banknote-grade security ink and bonded into the weave. Specified free of BPA, phthalates and azo dyes.
Using it
Does it really help my dog find it faster?
Here is the honest version. Established: dogs are dichromats, and orange sits in the same perceptual band as grass for them. Our own tests: in in-house trials, dogs found the UV-printed disc better than an unprinted one. That result is by our own criteria — it is not yet an independent, peer-reviewed controlled trial.
When we run an independent trial we will publish the protocol first, and the footage and the measured result go out to every customer by email either way. Until then, the accurate claim is: built on the biology and confirmed in our own testing — not yet independently verified. See the full research notes.
Is there a dog frisbee that doesn't sink?
Yes — GHOSTCATCHER floats, in our own tests. The rim is a ring of closed-cell foam, which doesn't soak up water, so the disc sits on the surface with the patterned face up and a throw into a lake or pool can be fetched back instead of sinking. Wring the fabric out afterwards and let it air dry.
How do I clean it?
This is where fabric earns its keep: machine wash, cold, gentle cycle, then air dry. Skip the tumble dryer — sustained heat is hard on the foam ring and can change how the disc flies.
Is there one size for every dog?
The first run is a single 23 cm size, which suits medium and large dogs — roughly 7 kg (15 lb) and up. A smaller size is planned once the first run is out, and customers get asked which size to tool first.
